Two Missouri-based companies climbed more than 40 positions in this year’s Fortune 500 as 10 companies in total made the magazine’s annual list of the largest U.S. companies.
Springfield-based auto parts retailer O’Reilly Automotive moved 46 spots up the list and is now ranked No. 268. Jones Financial, the St. Louis-based parent company of financial services firm Edward Jones, advanced 41 spots, reaching No. 295.
Another company ascending the list was Clayton-based health insurance provider Centene. It is ranked No. 24 after advancing 18 spots from its 2020 ranking. Centene remains the highest-ranked Missouri company on the list.
All 10 Missouri companies that were on the list in 2020 remained in the Fortune 500.
Emerson Electric lost the most ground of any Missouri company, moving down five spots to No. 181. The Ferguson-based conglomerate saw an 8.6% decrease in revenue during the past year.
Post Holdings advanced 25 spots on the list, ranking No. 474, despite showing a 99.4% decline in profits. The Brentwood-based consumer packaged goods company had a 0.3% increase in revenue during the past year.
Overall, Walmart kept its position atop the list, with $559 billion in revenue. Amazon was No. 2, with $386 billion in revenue. Both companies saw an influx of business during the pandemic, but Amazon showed a higher percentage gain in both revenue — 37.6% — and profit — 84.1% — from the previous year.
Apple, CVS Health and UnitedHealth Group rounded out the top five.
